Lecture: Stress-Free Degree – Colonialism and Canadian Confederation, Brian Gettler
June 3 @ 9:45 am - 10:45 am
In 1967, during the last great outpouring of scholarship on Confederation, historians paid virtually no attention to Indigenous peoples, land, and resources in their analyses of the origins of the Canadian state. This lecture will survey the current state of the field and suggest that instead of looking solely to traditional issues such as French-English compromise, or relations with Britain and the United States, we should also think about how colonialism and Indigenous dispossession contributed to shaping the country in the 1860s.
